The Pater Noster is undoubtedly the most widely recognized prayer in Latin—and for good reason. Known as the prayer “that Jesus taught us,” it captures, in its apparent simplicity, the essential elements of Christian doctrine and morality.
For many of you reading this newsletter, learning Latin is a way to deepen your understanding of the prayers recited in the Traditional Latin Mass. With this in mind, I’ve created a poster as your first step toward reading and appreciating the Pater Noster in its original form. The poster highlights the ten essential nouns in the prayer, beautifully illustrated with stunning imagery inspired by medieval and Renaissance art.
Learning vocabulary becomes far easier—and more enjoyable—when we link words to visual representations rather than simply translating them into English. These images are designed to be your best companions in mastering new Latin words.
It’s important to note that the words featured on the poster are in their nominative case—the form you’d typically find in a dictionary. For example, the poster includes the word pānis (bread) in the nominative case, rather than pānem, which appears in the prayer in the accusative case. (For an introduction to Latin declensions, check out First Steps in Latin Declension.)
Of course, knowing these nouns alone won’t be enough to fully understand the Pater Noster. To grasp its meaning completely, you’ll need to learn Latin grammar and syntax. However, recognizing these key words is a solid first step toward connecting with this profound and timeless prayer.

Loved this! The pictures and specifying the words were in nominative case really helped!
