The Roman Calendar

How to Give the Date in Latin

In this lesson, we explore the Roman calendar and learn how to express dates in Latin with clarity and confidence.

The Roman system of dating can be notoriously confusing—even for advanced students. To make it truly understandable, I break everything down step by step in the most accessible, student-friendly way possible.

We begin with the origins and meanings of the Roman month names, then move through the three anchor dates of every Roman month (Kalendae, Nonae, and Idūs), and finally learn exactly how to form dates in Latin, using the abbreviations and ordinal numbers you’ll encounter in inscriptions, manuscripts, and historical texts.

This video is a free preview of the material available to paid subscribers here on Substack, where you’ll find full lessons, guided explanations, and additional resources to help you read Latin with confidence.

If you’re ready to step deeper into the Roman world and begin thinking in the language of the Romans, consider becoming a paid subscriber and joining the course.
